“If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster;And treat those two impostors just the same”温布尔顿中心球馆大门上镶的苦口良言,《If》这首诗简直包含了竞技的所有智慧,浓缩了那么多人的影子。

唉。

如果
如果你能够在所有失去理智且怪罪于你的责备中保持清醒;
如果你能够在所有人怀疑你时仍相信自己,却允许别人的质疑;
或是被憎恨,却不轻易仇恨;
即使如此,也不要锋芒毕露,谈吐非凡;

如果你能够梦想——而不被梦想奴役;
如果你能够思考——却不舍本逐末、思虑过甚;
如果你能够在成功之时不忘形于色,在失败之时处之泰然;
如果你能够忍受自己口中的真理那些被骗子们曲解,用来误导愚人;
然后拾起用旧的工具,屈身投入重建;

失败后又从头开始,而从不为损失发出一声抱怨;
如果你能够强迫心神集中,当神摧力竭、肢体破损仍旧坚守——即使除了坚持的信念外一无所有;

如果你能面对众生而不失美德;
或是与王公并肩而不摧眉折腰;
如果敌人和挚友都不能伤害你;
如果芸芸众生于你皆宝贵,且无所偏颇;
如果你能够把六十秒钟的征程填入不可追回的每一分钟;

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!)
